Purpose: To compare fatigue, quality of display, and glasses comfort between Shutter Glasses and Film Patterned Retarder 3D TVs.
Methods: Forty two subjects watched two 3D movies through Shutter Glasses and Film Patterned Retarder 3D TVs during 40 minutes respectively in two different sessions. Perceived visual and physical fatigue was measured before and after watching 3D movies, and quality of display and comfort of spectacles were also measured after watching 3D movies. The pupil diameter and the blinking rate were measured by SMI Eye Tracker during watching 3D movies.
Results: The survey showed that perceived fatigue was increased after watching 3D movies while there is no significant difference on the perceived fatigue between Shutter Glasses and Film Patterned Retarder 3D TVs. Film Patterned Retarder glasses were more comfortable to wear and less visually intrusive than Shutter Glasses. The eye tracker data showed that the pupil diameter and blinking rate were decreased after watching 3D movies, and the pupil diameter(3.35¡¾0.65mm vs. 3.60¡¾0.74mm) and the interval of blinking(3.36¡¾1.75s vs. 4.50¡¾2.96s) by Shutter Glasses type was
shown to be lower than those by Film Patterned Retarder type.
Conclusions: Although FPR types afford better viewing comfort than shutter types, but subjective visual fatigue induced by 3D viewing is considered no difference in two viewing methods. There is considered to suggest a quantified method for measuring induced visual fatigue due to 3D viewing contents.
