Abstract

Background : Colon cancer is believed to develop from colon polyps. Therefore, the detection and cure of colon polyps will decrease the prevalence of colon cancer. However, consensus regarding the risk factors for colon polyps is lacking. The purpose of this study was to determine whether obesity and hypercholesterolemia are risk factors for colon polyps and whether the carcinoembryonic antigen level is a predictive factor.

Methods : We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with colon polyps who visited Dongsuwon General Hospital health promotion center in Suwon and underwent a colonoscopic examination and body measurements including waist circumference between January 2013 and December 2014. A total of 707 (481 men and 226 women) asymptomatic adults were included. We analyzed the relationships between the variables and colon polyps using age- and sex-adjusted multiple regression analysis.

Results : In the 707 patients, the prevalence of colon polyps was 13.6% (n=96). Of these polyps, 7.9% (56 patients) were adenomatous polyps, and 5.7% (40 patients) were hyperplastic polyps. Age was significantly higher in the group with polyps than in the group without polyps (P=0.004). There were no associations between the risk of colon polyps and body mass index, waist circumference, total cholesterol level, high density lipoprotein level, low density lipoprotein level, or carcinoembryonic antigen level.

Conclusion : Colon polyps were not associated with obesity, hypercholesterolemia, or the carcinoembryonic antigen level in asymptomatic healthy adults.
