Abstract

The root canal system consists of the main canal and accessory canals, and dentists can prepare only the main canal during root canal shaping. The canals are not straight and commonly have some degree of curvature or ramification. The diameter of canals is also reduced with age by calcification. Therefore, the canal preparation of narrow curved canal is particularly difficult due to the risk of transportation, perforation and ledge formation. Currently, nickel-titanium (NiTi) files are commonly used in the clinic for shaping of curved canals because of their super flexibility and high penetration ability. When using NiTi rotary files, the inner and outer walls of the curved canals are cut almost equally. This shows that NiTi files have better centering ability in the canal, and the original curvature of the root canal is retained. On the other hand, penetration and enlargement of calcified narrow canals with a small hand instrument before using NiTi files are necessary.
Dentists and students must acquire the skill of penetrating the canal using a hand file first. Here, I would like to introduce the education of root canal shaping in Japan and to describe the basic methods of using both NiTi files and stainless steel hand files.
