Abstract

In cases with severe pain, gingival or facial swelling, or sinus tract, emergency endodontic treatment is needed. Severe pain and swelling comes from pulpal and periapical infection and occurs during endodontic treatment or even after root canal obturation. In emergency endodontic treatment, accurate and timely diagnosis and relief of pain is essential. Because the cause of pain and swelling is irritation and bacterial infection of pulpal tissues, the principle of emergency endodontic treatment is removal of irritant in pulpal tissues. In this lecture, cause, diagnosis, and treatment of endodontic pain and swelling will be discussed.
