Abstract

Ni-Ti (nickel-titanium) rotary file instituted in the early 1990s. Lots of studies on the root canal therapy have been conducted for the last 20 years, and related new products have been incessantly released. Recently, Ni-Ti rotary file instruments have been developed and are now widely used in endodontics as an efficient technique. It has been settled as a universal and valid treatment method recognized by the most of dentists.

The new trend of Ni-Ti rotary file system has characteristics that it finishes root canal treatment with one file and realizes specific movements (reciprocation) on the engine. It is being evaluated that it has dramatically contributed to following curvatures well by giving reciprocation to the file and enhancing resistance to fractures. Definitely, it is very convenient system to shape the root canals.

However, it is not possible to finish root canal treatment with only one file. Many operators feel difficulty to shape root canal treatment using many files. But the difficulties of root canal treatment are caused by improper treatments, not by using many files. Therefore, the most important thing in root canal treatment is to form a firm basic ground.

Consequently, the most basic concept of the Ni-Ti rotary instrumentation is to understand the crown down procedures. The crown down procedure is a method that enlarges first the coronal 1/3 of the root canals, hence it is possible to shape and clean the apical 1/3 of the root canal.
