Abstract

We report a rare case of a large inverted papilloma on the prostatic urethra, which caused acute urinary retention. A 71-year old male patient visited our clinic with acute urinary retention. He had gross hematuria and voiding difficulty lasted for 6 days prior to visit. Cystoscopically, about 2x1x1cm sized large papillary tumor was found arising from the prostatic urethra, protruding into the bladder neck. Under the impression of papillary transitional cell carcinoma, transurethral resection was conducted. The papillary tumor on the prostatic urethra was resected completely. The pathologic study revealed the tumor as inverted papilloma. Negative result in ¡°GLUT-1 (glucose transporter-type-1)¡± immunohistochemical staining objectively supported the result of ¡®papilloma¡¯ with low degree of malignancy. The adjacent prostatic tissue was proved to be benign. The patient¡¯s gross hematuria and voiding difficulty improved after surgery and the patient was asymptomatic at 8 months follow-up after treatment
