This study intends to explore causes of addiction in social network service through suggesting several explanatory factors and hypotheses and testing them. Those factors include strains in family, school, and peer relations, depression, self-control, and smart phone use. This study focuses on depression as a main factor and its interaction effect with the perceived support in social network service on addiction. Using data from surveying 486 university students in Seoul, I find that the effects of strains on addiction are mediated by depression and depression has a strong effect on it. It is found that as predicted, depression has a larger significant effect than self-control on addiction in social network service. In addition, smart phone use has no significant effect on it. Results also show that the interaction effect between depression and the perceived support in social network service is significant, which means that those who are depressed are more likely to engage in addict when they are experienced social support in social network service.
