Abstract
Background: Acral fibrokeratoma (AFK) is a rare, benign tumor typically located on the fingers or toes. Nail deformity or longitudinal nail grooves associated with AFKs can lead to concerns about nail appearance and function. There has been no large-scale clinical study on AFK in Korea.
Objective: The aim of this study was to clarify clinical characteristics of AFK in Korea.
Methods: A diagnosis of AFK was confirmed by histopathology in 30 patients in Korea between 1996 and 2013. The epidemiology, clinical features, nail changes, dermoscopic findings, and treatments were retrospectively reviewed.
Results: The mean age of onset of AFK was 27.7 years. The male to female ratio was 1:1.7. Sixty-six lesions were diagnosed in 30 patients. The site of involvement was the finger (27.3%, n=18) or toe (72.7%, n=48). Longitudinal nail grooves were the most common nail deformity accompanying the tumors (94%, n=62). Dermoscopy revealed white scaly epidermal collarettes and dotted vessels. No disease recurrence was reported in patients who underwent excision of the tumors (n=21).
Conclusion: This study reports the clinical characteristics of AFK in Korea to raise the ability of dermatologists to recognize and diagnose this rare disease.
