Abstract

Remote monitoring of cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) is an innovation in the management of arrhythmia. Recently, many reports on the efficacy of remote monitoring for CIED have been published, with findings that include early detection of arrhythmias, reduced hospital admission rates, decreased stroke associated with arrhythmia, decreased appropriate or inappropriate implantable cardiac device (ICD) shock therapy, prolonged longevity of the battery, and decreased mortality. In addition to the development of wireless technology, CIED has been used for patient monitoring at 24 hours and 365 days with comfort.
Regrettably, the use of remote monitoring is limited in Korea, and requires revision of medical service law and communication law, as well as social consensus. Remote monitoring with technology development could revolutionize medical practice and disease management; however, there are medico-legal, cost, and integrated center care issues that remain unresolved. We should be fully prepared for the introduction of remote monitoring systems.
